Frank Warren and BT sport have announced today that Billy Joe Saunders next WBO world middleweight title defence will be against Martin Murray at the 02 Arena, London on April 14th, 2018.

It is set to be a world title doubleheader with Terry Flanagan also defending his WBO world super lightweight title against American Maurice Hooker on the undercard.

Billy Joe Saunders stock has risen enormously following a punch-perfect display against the dangerous hard hitting David Lemieux on the road in Canada, just over a month ago. The best performance from a British fighter on the road in recent memory.

It will be Martin Murray’s 5th shot at a world title and the announcement has come as a surprise given Murray is a Matchroom Sports fighter, according to Matchroom Sports website, not that it will be the first time fighters have traveled across the two rival promotional outfits and TV broadcasters Sky Sport and BT Sport.

It is likely seen as a keep busy fight for Saunders by Frank Warren as surely Saunders will be looking at the winner of Gennady Golovkin Vs Canelo Alvarez if that fight does happen, as expected in May. Saunders could then be looking at a huge big money unification fight with either in September.

Of course, Martin Murray will be looking to upset the party but on recent performances of both fighters, Saunders will go in as the strong favourite to make a 5th successful title defence.
