MGM resorts international, the owner of T-Mobile Arena, the location in which Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin were due to settle their differences in a highly anticipated rematch have offered fans who have bought tickets for the fight the option of a full refund. The company states this is due to the likelihood the May 5th bout will be canceled.
The fight was put in jeopardy following Canelo Alveraz testing positive for performance-enhancing drug clenbuterol twice on 17th and 20th of February by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency in his hometown, Guadalajara. Mexico.
Alvarez and his promoter Golden Boy have protested the fighters innocence from the start, citing Alvarez had eaten contaminated meat which had been a known issue in Mexico. However, the Nevada State Athletic Commission made the decision to temporarily suspend Alvarez last week and he now needs to attend a hearing on April 10th where his legal team will present his case and a panel of 5 commissioners will vote to decide if the fight will go ahead.
Alvarez has been tested several times by VADA since the positive tests in February and thus far has returned negative results for any more performance-enhancing drugs.
