Roy Jones Jr scored a wide unanimous decision win against Scott Sigmon in Florida last night in which the 49-year old states was his final fight in his legendary boxing career, Jones Jr took control of the fight from start to finish and even at 49 years old showed a gulf in class against his 30 year old opponent Sigmon who held a 30-11-1 record going into the fight.
All three judges returned scorecards of 98-92 to hand Jones Jr his final farewell victory, Jones Jr claimed to have also torn his bicep in the days before the fight but as it was his final fight, refused to pull out.
Jones Jr stated “I love each and every fan that came out to support me tonight, I don’t make excuses but last week I tore my bicep in my left arm again but because it was my final fight I refused to pull out”
Jone Jr then proceeded to call out MMA star 42-year-old Anderson Silva “Dana (White) I know your listening, I know Anderson’s suspended. But that is the only other fight Roy Jones Jr will return to the ring for, other than that, the chapters closed”
It has been a legendary 30-year career for Jones Jr who is a six-time former world champion in four different weight classes, he remains the only boxer to begin his career at light middleweight to go on and win a world title at heavyweight.
Also voted fighter of the decade for the 1990’s and arguably one of the best fighters to ever grace the ring it is the end of an era but one that many may feel is long overdue.
